And I must note that, even as a teen who saw Dr. Strangelove on TV a few years after it came out, I was not alone in feeling that deep down it was way more than a dark fantasy.

The laxness of nuke control in the ’50s was a well-buried nightmare for US citizens — pretending everybody could file down to their Homemade Tomb — er, I mean, Fallout Shelter — and survive was just a mental fig leaf to make getting up in the morning bearable. It’s a miracle there wasn’t an utter catastrophe at some point.
