Just a Couple More Things About Old “National Lampoon,” I Promise

(Or whatever — hey it’s my cry and I’ll blog if I want party.)

Looking through the comics at the back of the “25th Anniversary” issue (months, not years — April 1972) that I had not seen since, oh, 1984 maybe, I noticed artist Peter Bramley and (presumably writer) Susan Harris’s “Vinny Shinblind — The Invisible Sex Maniac.” Bit reminiscent of good ol’ Bobby London (who also contributed to Nat. Lampoon) and therefore Grand Old Master E.C. Segar. Pretty entertaining … for a rape joke. (All the Vinny things I can recall were rape-joke variants.) I remember finding the comix funny and disturbing back in the day and now realize the disturbing part was the rapey aspect. So one vaguely wonders whatever happened to Bramley (who was art director for the mag in the early days). Found out he died at 60 in 2005, came from Braintree MA and had a pretty interesting life. Even if it makes me realize how vanished the world of this mag is now. And even if I remember looking at Cloud Comix back in the day and skipping it because lame.

Gotta like his sartorial flair.

Phooey. The Times dumped his perfect funky/pseudo tropical-dude vibe photo. Guess I’ll put up my own:

Bramley
