R.I.P. Michael Brown of Left Banke

The Renee of “Walk Away Renee”:

One of the few teenage-heartbreak classics written by teenagers. Too bad Michael Brown couldn’t find a place to be comfortable (he helped found and then left the group Stories before they took off with “Brother Louie”). The best tracks by Left Banke feature elements I usually despise: keyboard layers, strings, “lush” arrangements. But they float up there, untouchable and unlike anything else. The collection There’s Gonna Be a Storm includes valuable rarities and sound much improved from the cheapy-vinyl LPs.

Good interview with Left Banke bassist Tom Finn that includes a lot of scoop I did not know.
