An Early-20th-Century Joke

Something you don’t run across every day, right?

_______________

He knew that our father was dead.

He knew what a life he had led.

So I knew what he meant when he said

“Go to father!”

PS: found some folk sources for this …

‘‘Go to Father,’’ she said,
When he asked her to wed,
For she knew that he knew that her father was dead,
And she knew that he knew what a life he had led,
So she knew that he knew what she meant when she said,
‘‘Go to Father.’’
