Boston Jazz Afternoon: Ken McIntyre

Lovely collection on Fresh Sounds — gathers Stone Blues (1960, recorded first but released second; features all-Boston accompaniment, none well-known), Looking Ahead (1960, featuring Eric Dolphy and the only release of these I had before now) and Honi Gordon Sings (1962, the only release by the churchy, talented, mysterious Ms. Gordon — Jacki Byard wonderful with singers, as always). McIntyre should be a lot more well known than he is. Quit the recording rat-race at the end of the ’70s and went into teaching, except for a couple later releases (1998, 2000) that sounded lesser than his prime period to me. Compositions in particular are neglected, dammit.
