R.I.P.: The True Fifth Beatle

George Martin, of course.

Three phases, in my memory at least:

The first (false) aura was that he was the serious talent around the Beatles because he was classically trained they had to be, more or less, puppets.

This disappeared when it became clear the band had moved beyond him, starting with the White Album if not some time before.

The current state in which it’s sometimes claimed that the early Beatles sound staid or dated — but they absolutely do not. Martin’s insights hold up as damned close to timeless.

PS: Thought the Love project showed a lot of still-fresh attention and care. Maybe a zesty novelty, but something only Martin could pull off.
