R.I.P.: Nana Vasconcelos

He really was the Jimi Hendrix of Brazilian percussion. I have dozens of albums that feature him (I’m not as crazy about his work with Pat Metheny as some people, however). The one that features this number, “Africadeus,” will be reissued next month and I will try to write about it:


I think my favorite album under his name is Bush Dance (1987), which is as engrossing and quicksilver as an almost pure-percussion album can be. A sorcerer.
