Music Algorithms = Top 40 Radio

There’s current fretting about streaming services and their algorithms ruining the pleasure of discovering music for yourself, but I think the whole thing is merely an old marketing scheme in new tech garb. Top 40 radio always appealed to an audience who wanted music that they liked well enough handed to them. The discovering it yourself part was what they didn’t want to bother with. Algorithms give the process a you-and-you-alone veneer but the appeal (and the most satisfied audience) is the same as it ever was.
