Various, Hungarian Noir: A Tribute to the Gloomy Sunday ((piranha))
This collection trying hard as hell with varied tone and texture and language and cultural context. But one of the toughest formats of all is a dozen versions of the same song. Esp. one that’s, you know, more than a little innately depressing in words as well as music.
Toughest question to resolve: is it a stunt that barely crosses the line of working all the way through and how much can that be praised; or is it an oddball triumph that opens a new world through a single tune?
A major problem is that Lady D’s version does just blast the rest out the well of tears.
