I make zero attempt to weed out duplicate recordings of Mingus and Monk in the collection. I’m sure I have three or more copies of several large chunks. That’s because if, in my final moments, I only have the strength to put on one record, those guys would be around the top of the options. Gotta be easy to grab wherever I keep recordings.
Likewise, I have several versions of everything Jelly Roll Morton recorded. Because of the above reason, but also because, for reasons I can’t begin to explain, every issued version of his work I’ve heard — vinyl or CD — sound different to me. Not profoundly different, but with funny currents running under the surface that I don’t notice in any other issued version. I am not shitting you.
