Why It’s Good To Have the Vinyl Back Around, Pt. One

Just mucking about looking for Sunday morning surprise, I ran across Simon Shaheen, Music of Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Axiom, 1990, co-produced by Bill Laswell). Years before that, even, I became fascinated by Wahab because of his long relationship with Uum Kulthoum and he quickly became my all-time favorite Egyptian composer and conductor (not that crazy about his vocals). The Shaheen collection is a flawless update — here’s a review and here’s personnel scoop along with three whole tracks. Too bad it’s hard to find, but grab if you see.
