I had about a five-year period of impassioned computer gameplay. From the release of SimCity (1989), when my home computer was a pretty new toy, to a year after the release of Doom 2 (1994). I thought that while there were a lot of ways to develop the landscape with SimCity, you kept hitting the same ceiling of success over and over. Boring. And while Doom was obviously very open-ended adventure, I’ve never liked “shooter” games because I take shooting weapons very seriously and feel such games have the undeniable tendency to make you crueler and more detached about such matters. Which underscores that, yes, games are different from books and movies.
