Ron Stabinsky, Free for One (Hot Cup)
If I didn’t hardcore prefer ensembles to solo performance, this would have been a likely topper. (If I had heard it, that is.) Eight all-improvised piano works recorded in one day. Full of ideas, dynamics that are fun to follow and tonal adventures. Narrative stories every so often, surreal interludes just as much. Stabinsky even designed the cover art. A sturdy review.
Biggest surprise of all — Mostly Other People Do the Killing has never killed me. Sometimes even thought the band should be called Mostly These People Do the Boring.
